Edward D. Wood, Jr. produced and directed the low-budget “Jail Bait” in 1954, a ’30s-style gangster film with a twist ending a la The Twilight Zone. (The misleading title refers to an illegal hand gun.) He also co-wrote the screenplay with writer-producer friend Alex Gordon. It was Gordon who introduced Wood to Bela Lugosi 1952. (Gordon soon went on to help create American International Pictures.) Lugosi was cast as the father of the lead character, but dropped out due to illness. Steve Reeves, 1947 AAU Mr. America, 1948 Mr. World, and the first NABBA Mr. Universe in 1950, was cast in “Jail Bait” as a cop. This is one of the few opportunities to hear Reeves’ voice as most of his later films were dubbed. I have seen this film several times and the one thought that runs through my mind is Mr. Wood had to personally pick out and most likely wear, each and every piece of womens clothing in this film. It is believed that Wood’s mother, Lillian, always wanted a girl and would sometimes, until he was about 12 years old, dress her son in skirts and dresses. For the rest of his life, Wood was a heterosexual transvestite.

People Tree takes Emma Watson to Bangladesh to visit the slum homes of garment factory workers. Emma also visits Fair Trade producer group Swallows to see how People Tree clothing is made. The end result is the new autumn winter collection which is endorsed by Emma Watson. Emma Watson said: ‘Although I wasn’t centrally involved in the design of this collection, I had great fun in helping People Tree select some gorgeous Fair Trade textiles — a dogtooth hand-woven check, cable knits, and the first Fair Trade hand-woven brushed checked fabric which has been made into easy tulip skirts, dresses and shirts. There are even a few party dresses, such as the little black satin tulip dress which can be dressed up or down to suit any occasion’ ‘Following my summer collection for People Tree I wanted to visit Bangladesh to see the difference Fair Trade makes. The contrast between the slums in Dhaka (the capital of Bangladesh) where the people who work in the garment factories live and Swallows (the Fair Trade community supported by People Tree) was all too apparent. I still find it hard to convey what Fair Trade means to those producing our fashion — it’s just so impressive to see how the women have used Fair Trade clothing to escape poverty and empower themselves and their children. I was moved and inspired.’
